On February 2nd we headed down to the
Blue Grass Nursery beside the Balzac Mall for their annual Groundhog Day celebration.
We arrived bright and early, with Miss Rodeo Canada , for the
delicious complimentary breakfast. While we ate we listened to a very talented
live band, and took in the sight of the beautifully decorated store. It was
very hard not to stay and shop all day. After breakfast we hung out with the
kids signing autographs, taking photos, and playing on the indoor playground. Around 8 am everyone went outside and waited for
the special event, the awakening of Balzac Billy. As we all stood there,
huddled around Billy’s hole, the crowd
chanted “Billy, Billy!”. The children, and even some of the adults, were
jumping up and down with excitement. Suddenly, a paw full of dirt was thrown up from
the hole, then another, and then Balzac Billy finally emerged. After a few
stretches, he must have been stiff from that long sleep, Billy gave the crowd
and big wave then went around and said hello to every body. He did not see his
shadow, so we are hoping for an early spring since we had an early winter.
It was a wonderful event and a great way to bring the community
together. Thank you to the Blue Grass Nursery for hosting the event and for
having us out. We really enjoyed it and hope to make it out again next year. Also, thank you to Covy Moore for taking some wonderful pictures of us at the event.
See you down the trail,
Airdrie Rodeo Royalty
