Miss Rodeo Airdrie 2011 Farewell

It’s hard to believe that a year has gone by since I was crowned Miss Rodeo Airdrie 2011. I have had one of the most amazing experiences that I will cherish throughout my lifetime. I have come across many individuals who have shared laughs, tears, and smiles along my journey, that have all shaped me into a more confident and well rounded individual. I have experienced many moments and opportunities that most will never get to. 

During our year, Rebecca and I were able to make over 150 appearances, traveling to many rodeos, galas, conventions, and even the Denver Stock Show and Rodeo, thanks to Jim Nevada at Roper Stetson. We have met and worked alongside many volunteers throughout this community, and I can truly say it has been a pleasure getting to know you all! 

I would like to take this opportunity to thank-everyone who made this year possible. Thank you to all of the Miss Rodeo Airdrie sponsors, your generosity has helped us do the best job that we could, and allowed us to represent this community to the best of our ability. I’d like to thank my family and friends for being so supportive of me, I could not have done it with out each and every one of you! Thank-you to all my fellow royalty I have gotten to know over this past year. You are all beautiful and determined women that I am so privileged to have gotten to know. I would like send a huge to thank the Airdrie Rodeo Royalty Committee. Without you we would not have had such a successful year. Leanne Grenier, you have been such a great mentor and friend along this journey and I want to thank you for doing all that you have done for us! I would also like to thank Lorie Young, and Barb Garnham for also contributing their time. I would like to thank the city of Airdrie, you have all been such a great community to be involved with, and I feel so honored to have had this opportunity to represent you. Thank you for being so accommodating and welcoming me into your community. I would like to thank the Airdrie Rodeo Ranch Association and committee for being so great to work with, you have all been like a family to me and I hope to continue to be involved with this great association. I will also do my best to represent you at the Miss Rodeo Canada Pageant in November.

 Rebecca McKay, where would I be, and what would I have done without you? You have been such an amazing person to share this experience with, and I can’t imagine it with anyone else. You have been on board to work as a team from the beginning. It’s been a blast, I will cherish your friendship and the memories we have shared. I would like to thank my horse Flash. You are the most amazing horse a Queen could ask for. You have always been so reliable, and so much fun to ride! You have shared this experience with me also, and you have done such an outstanding job at representing Airdrie as well. I am so grateful for everyone who made this year possible! I would like to dedicate this message in memory of my Mother J.C. Shields. Thank you for sending me in the right direction.

Airdrie Pro Rodeo Princess 2011 Farewell

Today is the final day of our reign as we crown our new Miss Rodeo Airdrie and Airdrie Pro Rodeo Princess. We have two lovely ladies vying for the titles and I wish them both the best of luck.

I have shared the past year with a fantastic partner, Gillian Shields. She has been inspiring, supportive, and fun. The friendship we have generated is outstanding. I will always be able to consider Gillian a close friend.

My year has been filled with many great experiences. I have also created a stronger relationship with the vibrant community of Airdrie. I have always appreciated Airdrie, as it is my hometown. However, my reign has brought me closer to this beautiful city and I am so grateful. The community has been extremely supportive and generous. It makes me proud to be from such an amazing place. I have had the best time of my life representing this fantastic community.

There have been many memorable events that we have attended. Our year started off on the day after we were crowned as we headed north to attend the Ponoka Stampede. We also rode in the 99^th edition of the Calgary Stampede Parade and attended the Rodeo. Gillian and I were thrilled to attend the Airdrie Air Show. During our year we met many people at pancake breakfasts, rodeos, and parades. We have attended plenty of community events and fundraisers. We even got to help roof the Habitat for Humanity house in Airdrie.

We have had the opportunity to travel to Edmonton for the Canadian Finals Rodeo and the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies Convention. We were also sponsored by Jim Nevada and Roper Stetson/Karman Inc. to go to Denver, Colorado for the National Western Rodeo and Stock Show.  We visited the Pro Rodeo Hall of fame which was an amazing experience.

I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to our many sponsors. I then moved on to work at SAIT Polytechnic. They have been incredible and supportive of my time commitments.

My family and friends have also been very supportive. Thanks to my Mom, Margaret, my Dad, Don, and my Brother, Matthew for believing in me and helping me down the road. Thank you to Covy, who became very close to me as I travelled down the rodeo trail. This year has also brought many new friends in the form of Rodeo royalty, community members, and sponsors. Last but not least I want to thank Leanne Grenier and the rest of the Airdrie Rodeo Ranch Association. They are such a hardworking group of talented people who put their heart and soul into producing this rodeo.

This September I will compete for Calgary Stampede Royalty. Good luck to Gillian on your quest for Miss Rodeo Canada, I am cheering for you!

My year as your princess may be complete but I’ll still be dedicated to this rodeo for many years to come.

Empty Bowls 2012

You may remember our post earlier when the Rodeo Association went to paint bowls in support of the Airdrie Food Bank.  Well Today, Saturday June 23rd, marked the 6th Annual event.  And we are happy to still be a part of it.

The 2012 Contestants had a great day hanging out in the children's activities area, and enjoyed there soup as well.  All the soup was donated from 20 different Restaurants in Airdrie. 

Here are a few of the finished creations we could find that we had decorated.  The bowls go so fast that you have to be there kinda early to find and buy your own.  Each bowl is $20 which goes directly to the Airdrie Foodbank.  We couldn't find Samanthas.

There were a lot of exhibitors, and promotional items on display for the upcoming ARTember in Airdrie.  Samantha and Nicole got a chance to put there mark on a painting in the making.  Cowboy Hat's Buckles & All.





It was an amazing day for our upcoming 2012 Contestants.  Thanks for allowing us to come and be a part of this event.  I know it was a great day.

5th Annual Race for Kids

This morning, we took the 2012 Contestants to the 5th Annual Race for Kids in Glenmore Park -  Calgary, AB.  This was the first time we've been to this event, and what an amazing uplifting experience.

It was a great morning filled with lots of kids and little amazing Superhero's.  The morning started with some opening word from on the the Calgary Police Officials, as well as Calgary Deputy Mayor. 

With something for the kids, they had a Superhero 1K parade / race that they all got to participate in.  Nicole and Samantha were there to cheer them all on.  And wow, did it ever make you feel good to watch them all.  Way to go kids.

Before we sent off the 5K and 10K runners and walkers the girls got involved with the warm up.

It was a great day, even with the little bit of rain we started out with.  It was great to see so many people come out and participate and support a great job.

Wednesday June 13, 2012 - MRA Pageant Public Speaking

We held our annual Public Speaking portion of the MRA Pageant, and all the girls did a wonderful job.  Gillian and Rebecca put together a wonderful slide show of there past year, so we could all see where they have been going and what they've been up to.  They also humored us with some great stories of there experiences.  Thanks Ladies.
